Story #1 – Stolen Pumpkins Returned Carved

Someone played a Halloween trick on at least two Virginia families, stealing pumpkins from front porches and returning them carved.
Chrissi Blasius of Manassas says that she had a basketball sized pumpkin on her front porch. It was taken and returned with: “two triangle eyes, a triangle nose and a mouth with two teeth missing.” Her neighbor, Lisa Harlow, also reported one of her pumpkins was taken during the night and returned. Her pumpkin was taken from her porch and came back with one eye carved like a star. “It’s Halloween and I guess people do strange and weird things,” Harlow said.

Story #2 – 112 Year Old Man Marries A 17 Year Old

A Somali man who claims to be 112 years old has married for the sixth time, and he hopes to have children with his 17 year old bride. Hundreds of people attended the wedding this week in the town of Guriceel in central Somalia. “Today God helped me realize my dream,” groom Ahmed Muhamed Dore said, according to The Guardian.
The bride, Safia Abdulleh, did not comment, but her family said she was “happy with her new husband” even though he is nearly a century her senior. BBC reporter Mohammed Olad Hassan, who is based in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, said Dore told him he was born in 1897 and he has a traditional birth certificate, written on a goat skin by his father. Dore has 13 children by his five previous wives. His oldest son is 80. Three of his wives have died, but the remaining two consented to the new wedding, as did the bride’s parents and the groom’s children. Altogether, Dore has 114 children and grandchildren. But he said he hopes to have more children with his new wife, who is young enough to be his great-great-granddaughter. “It is a blessing to have someone you love to take care of you,” he said. Although it’s not unusual for Somali girls to marry older men, the reports cited historians in the Horn of Africa nation as saying this wedding was the first marriage with such a great age disparity in more than a century. Dore said he and his bride are from the same village, and he waited for her to grow up. “I didn’t force her, but used my experience to convince her of my love, and then we agreed to marry,” he said.

Story #3 – Chemistry Student Blows Head Off With Exploding Gum

A chemistry student has been found dead with his jaw blown off by what is believed to be exploding chewing gum, reports have said. A forensic examination established that the chewing gum was covered with an unidentified chemical substance, thought to be some type of explosive material. The student apparently had a bizarre habit of chewing gum after dipping it into citric acid, Russian news agency Ria Novosti said. Officers found both citric acid packets and a similar looking unidentified substance, believed to be some kind of explosive material, on a table near the body, the agency continued. Investigators suspect that the student simply confused the packets and put gum covered with explosive material into his mouth. Forensic experts were to travel from Kiev to investigate the substance, as local authorities feared it may explode if transported. The 25 year old’s disfigured remains were discovered at his parent’s home in the northern Ukrainian city of Konotop, reports in the Eastern European country said. The young man, who studied at Kiev Polytechnic Institute, was working at a computer late on Saturday when the alleged explosion happened. “A loud pop was heard from the student’s room,” the city’s police chief said. “When his relatives entered the room, they saw that the lower part of the young man’s face had been blown off.”

Story #4 – Playful Dolphin Getting Bad Rap

An aggressive four year old bottlenose dolphin has been accused of bullying swimmers and waterskiers in New Zealand. Rescue services had to be called after the animal’s intimidating behaviour prevented six people from swimming back to shore in separate incidents in the past week. Moko, who weighs some 250kg and used to live off Mahia on New Zealand’s east coast, was initially praised for his friendly nature. But since making Gisborne his home in September he has trapped swimmers, overturned kayaks, tipped over waterskiers, and interfered with surf lifesaving training. Marine Science expert Professor Mark Orams has compared Moko’s personality change to humans going through puberty. He’s doing what we all do as teenagers,” he said. “He’s testing his boundaries, but he’s testing them on humans, and humans are coming off second best.” However, he expressed sympathy for the animal. “Here you’ve got a very lonely bottlenose who loves human contact, but he’s getting way too big and strong for it,” he said. The expert said he was worried the situation would get worse, with either Moko being hurt or causing major injuries. In one incident last month the dolphin stole a 16 year old boy’s surfboard while the boy was 500m offshore. Olympic kayaking double gold medallist and surf lifesaving instructor Alan Thompson said “If you don’t like the way he plays, then don’t go out in the water.”

Story #1 – Fish Killed After Woman Drives Into Aquarium

The driver and the child in her lap survived when a pickup truck slammed into a 1,500 gallon aquarium at Tampa International Airport. The tropical fish were not so lucky.
Airport officials said 36 year old Yamile Campuzano-Martine lost control of her truck and drove into the saltwater tank outside the American Airlines baggage claim Monday night. Airport spokeswoman Brenda Geoghagan said the driver had an unrestrained 6 year old boy in her lap. About 90 percent of the 30 to 40 saltwater fish in the tank were killed. The aquarium was part of a public art program. The airport spent $200,000 on the exhibit, which included the 12 foot tank. Campuzano-Martine was cited for careless driving.

Story #2 – Woman Passes Driver Exam After 950 Attempts

A woman in South Korea who tried to pass the written exam for a driver’s license with near daily attempts since April 2005 has finally succeeded on her 950th time. The aspiring driver spent more than $4,200 in application fees, but until now had failed to score the minimum 60 out of a possible 100 points needed to get behind the wheel for a driving test. Cha Sa-soon, 68, finally passed the written exam with a score of 60 on Wednesday, said Choi Young-chul, a police official at the drivers’ license agency in Jeonju, 130 miles south of Seoul. Police said Cha took the test hundreds of times, but had no specific total. Local media said she took the test 950 times. Now she must pass a driving test before getting her license, Choi said. She told the Korea Times newspaper she needed the license for her vegetable selling business.

Story #3 – Man Comes To His Own Funeral

A Brazilian bricklayer reportedly killed in a car crash shocked his mourning family by showing up alive at his funeral. Relatives of Ademir Jorge Goncalves, 59, had identified him as the victim of a Sunday night car crash in Parana state in southern Brazil, police said. As is customary in Brazil, the funeral was held the following day, which happened to be the holiday of Finados, when Brazilians visit cemeteries to honor the dead. What family members didn’t know was that Goncalves had spent the night at a truck stop talking with friends over drinks of a sugarcane liquor known as cachaca, his niece Rosa Sampaio told the O Globo newspaper. He did not get word about his own funeral until it was already happening Monday morning. A police spokesman in the town of Santo Antonio da Platina said Goncalves rushed to the funeral to let family members know he was not dead. “The corpse was badly disfigured, but dressed in similar clothing,” said the police spokesman, who talked on condition of anonymity as he wasn’t authorized to discuss the case. “People are afraid to look for very long when they identify bodies, and I think that is what happened in this case.”
Sampaio told O Globo that some family members were not sure the body was Goncalves. “My two uncles and I had doubts about the identification,” she told O Globo. “But an aunt and four of his friends identified the body, so what were we to do? We went ahead with the funeral.” The police spokesman confirmed there were doubts: “His mom looked at the body in the casket and thought something was strange. She looked and looked and couldn’t believe it was her son,” Sampaio said. “Before long, the walking dead appeared at the funeral. It was a relief.” The body was correctly identified later Monday, the police spokesman said, and has already been buried in another state. He declined to release the actual victim’s name.

Story #4 – Woman Calls 911 And reports Herself As A Drunk Driver

Late on a Saturday night, a Wisconsin woman called 911 to report a drunken driver: herself. In a recording of the call, the dispatcher is heard asking Mary Strey, 49, “You behind them?” Strey answers, “No, I am them.” The confused dispatcher asks, “You am them?” And Strey responds, “Yes, I am them.” The dispatcher then tells Strey to pull over so she doesn’t have an accident. The 911 recording was released Friday, and Strey was charged last week with driving drunk and operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol level of 0.1 or more. Strey is heard on the call asking if she should turn the car off and put her hazard lights on. Police said Strey told them she had had seven or eight brandy and Cokes at different bars and was on her way home when she called.

Story #1 – Man’s Ecstasy Pill Collection Stolen

A man who said he spent two decades collecting Ecstasy pills of all colors and shapes as a hobby has turned to police for help after they were stolen, because he said some of them are poisonous. Police say the 46 year old man, who was not identified, decided to report the theft despite the illegal nature of the collection because he was worried about the possible consequences if anybody were to swallow one of the poisoned pills. It was not immediately clear why about 40 red and white pills out of the 2,400 pill strong collection would be poisoned, but the police said they fear the drugs could be lethal if swallowed. “That’s really the main reason he came to the police,” said police spokeswoman Esther Naber, adding the man “knows he’s not going to get his collection back.” A report in De Volkskrant daily Thursday said the man claimed he was not a drug dealer or user. “I’ve tried it before but didn’t like it,” the report quoted him saying. “My passion for collecting comes from the varied collection of colors, shapes and logos that are printed on the pills.” According to a police statement, the man gathered the pills over a 20 year period and carefully stored them in coin collecting folders. The folders were allegedly taken during a break-in Wednesday at the man’s home in Eerbeek, 56 miles east of Amsterdam. Police spokesman Naber said investigators tended to believe the man’s story. “Why would you make something like this up?” she said. Prosecutors and drug enforcement officials are still weighing whether to charge him with a crime. “Given that the pills have disappeared, for the moment there’s no evidence to support a possession charge,” Naber said.

Story #2 – Man Cleared In Wife’s Death – It Was A Moose

Swedish police say they’ve cleared a man who was arrested for allegedly murdering his wife after deciding the culprit was most likely a moose.
Police spokesman Ulf Karlsson says “the improbable has become probable” in the puzzling death last year of 63-year old Agneta Westlund. She was found dead after an evening stroll in the forest. According to news reports, the victim’s husband, Ingemar Westlund, was jailed for 10 days. The case against him was dropped in January.
Karlsson declined to give details of the case Saturday, saying a news conference would be held Tuesday.
The tabloid Expressen says hairs and saliva from a moose were found on the victim’s clothes. Police would not immediately confirm that.

Story #3 – Man With Sleep Disorder Found Innocent In Wife’s Death

A British man who said he strangled his wife during a nightmare about fighting off an intruder has been found innocent in her death. Prosecutors had originally asked a jury to find Brian Thomas not guilty by reason of insanity, which could see him sent to a psychiatric hospital. But they withdrew the case against him on Friday, and said expert opinion was that hospitalization was not appropriate. “It is now clear that the psychiatrists feel that that would serve no useful purpose and the risk of reoccurrence is very, very small,” said Iwan Jenkins, Chief Crown Prosecutor for the Dyfed Powys region in Wales. “We therefore have offered no further evidence and asked the jury to return a simple verdict of not guilty.” Thomas had accepted he had killed Christine, his childhood sweetheart and wife of 40 years, the jury was told at the beginning of his trial earlier this week. The Thomases, who lived outside Swansea, about 185 miles west of London, were on holiday in their camper van in July 2008. After having their sleep disturbed by cars racing nearby, Brian Thomas had a nightmare that someone was breaking into the van. The court was told that Brian Thomas suffered from a long-term sleep disorder and was in a state of automatism, where his mind had no control over his body , when he strangled Christine, with whom he had two daughters.
Jenkins said sophisticated tests by sleep experts were needed to confirm Thomas’ condition, and that fewer than 50 instances had been recorded worldwide.
High Court Justice Nigel Davis called Thomas a “decent man and devoted husband” and said he understood that the 59 year old would feel guilty.
But “in the eyes of the law, you bear no responsibility for what happened,” Davis said.

Story #4 – Student Returns Library Books 51 Years Late Along With $1,000

A high school librarian in Phoenix says a former student at the school returned two overdue books checked out 51 years ago along with a $1,000 money order to cover the fines. Camelback High School librarian Georgette Bordine says the two Audubon Society books checked out in 1959 and the money order were sent by someone who wanted to remain anonymous. “It was just so overwhelming,” Bordine said of her reaction when she opened the box. Bordine says the letter explained that the borrower’s family moved to another state and the books were mistakenly packed. The letter said the money order was to cover fines of 2 cents per day for each book. That would total about $745. The letter says the extra money was added in case the rates had changed. Bordine says the money will buy more books, and the overdue books will be returned to the shelves.

Nome, Alaska, has been the center of an alarming series of strange disappearances. So many, the FBI has sent agents there 10 times more than to the much bigger Anchorage. “The Fourth Kind” is based on the testimony of a psychologist who found, circa 2000, that many of her patients reported waking at 3 a.m. with the sense that something was wrong and seeing an owl with its eyes on them.

The only ways in to Nome, Alaska, are by sea, air, dogsled or birth canal. Why the aliens chose this community of 9,261 to abduct so many people is a mystery. Also why owls stare into bedroom windows.

The film goes to great lengths to be realistic. “I am the actress Milla Jovovich,” Jovovich tells us at the outset, explaining that in the film she plays the psychologist Abigail Tyler, whose testimony was videotaped. Other fact based characters are her colleagues, the local sheriff and a professor who interviews her. “Every scene in this movie is supported by archived footage,” she says, and to prove it, Osunsanmi, who’s also the director, uses split screen to show Jovovich and the real Abigail talking almost simultaneously. The real psychologist’s name has been changed, but since she’s right there on the screen, how much of a mystery can she be in Nome?

In the film we see the “real” footage of “actual” client interviews with “Abigail.” Why would a real psychologist release confidential videotapes to a horror film, especially tapes showing her clients having seizures? Who are those “actual clients,” really? The end credits don’t thank them, although Jovovich’s intro claims to explain them. Remember, even in a movie “based on a true story”, nothing before the actual end credits needs to be true. You want to watch those credits like a hawk. My theory is, the “actual” clients are played by the actors also playing their fictional versions. I can’t be sure of that.

“The Fourth Kind” is a pseudo-documentary like “Paranormal Activity” and “The Blair Witch Project.” But unlike those two, which just forge ahead with their home video cameras, this one encumbers its flow with ceaseless reminders that it is a dramatization of real events.

It was with crushing disappointment that my research discovered this is all made up out of whole cloth, including the real Abigail. The film wasn’t even shot in Nome, but mostly in Bulgaria. And Dallas Massie, a retired state trooper who’s the acting police chief in Nome, says he’s heard nothing about aliens.

I learn all this from the blog of an Anchorage Daily News reporter, Kyle Hopkins, who says about 20 people have indeed disappeared in the area since the 1960s, and writes: “The FBI stepped in, reviewing two dozen cases, eventually determining that excessive alcohol consumption and the winter climate were a common link in many of the cases. Some of the dead were killed by exposure or from falling off a jetty into the frigid Snake River.”

“2012,” the mother of all disaster movies spends half an hour on set up scenes, then unleashes two hours of cataclysmic special events hammering the Earth relentlessly.

“2012″ delivers what it promises, and since nobody will buy a ticket expecting anything else, it will be, for its audiences, one of the most satisfactory films of the year. It even has real actors in it. Like all the best disaster movies, it’s funniest at its most hysterical. You think you havve seen end of the world movies? This one ends the world, stomps on it, grinds it up and spits it out. It’s not so much that the Earth is destroyed, but that it’s done so thoroughly.

Roland Emmerich, the director and co-writer, thinks on a big scale. Yes, he destroys regular stuff. It will come as little surprise that the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy rides a tsunami onto the White House. When St. Peter’s Basilica is destroyed, Leonardo’s God and Adam are split apart just where their fingers touch. Then when Emmerich gets warmed up, the globe’s tectonic plates shift thousands of miles, water covers the planet, and a giraffe walks aboard an ark.

Like in all disaster movies, landmarks fall like dominos. The Empire State Building is made of rubber. The Golden Gate Bridge collapses like clockwork. Big Ben ticks his last. The Eiffel Tower, destroyed.

This is for anyone in the National Mall, When the Earth’s crust is shifting, do not stand within range of the Washington Monument. Chicago is often spared, we are not as iconic as Manhattan. There’s little in Los Angeles distinctive enough to be destroyed, but it all goes, anyway.

Also on board are the humans chosen to survive, including all the characters who have not already been crushed, drowned or fallen into great crevices opening up in the Earth.

Many gigantic arks have been secretly constructed inside the Himalayas by the Chinese, funded by a global consortium, and they are the only chance of the human race surviving. Along with the animals on board, there’s the maybe well named Noah. In theory, ark ticketholders represent a cross section of the globe, chosen democratically. In practice, Carl Anheuser pulls strings to benefit the rich and connected, and wants to strand desperate poor people on the dock.

The movie gives you your money’s worth. No doubt it will inflame fears about our demise on December 21st, 2012.

While most people were home enjoying turkey, football and a cozy fireplace with family, Frank Makaravage was camped out in front of the Best Buy grilling hot dogs, sipping on hot cocoa and counting down the hours until he could get his hands on a $400 HP laptop for half the price and a camcorder on sale for less than $200.

Makaravage is a Black Friday veteran, though he said this is the first time he has ever been first in line and the first time he came to shop looking like he was on a camping trip.

The man and his nephew, Pat Belusko, arrived at the Arena Hub Plaza at 3:15 p.m. Thanksgiving afternoon. They came prepared with a two man dome tent, hand warmers and nourishment. He staked out a piece of the sidewalk just to the right of the front door.

He said he was determined to get the laptop and camcorder, even if it meant braving 14 hours of wind, rain and hot dogs. He came prepared to sell hot dogs, hot chocolate and hand warmers to others in line but he was so happy he was first in line and guaranteed both items on his wish list that he decided to share his bounty for free. “I was in a good mood,” he said. “I even threw in mustard and ketchup.”

Sarah Ross, said she used to laugh at the people camping out or waiting in line for hours to save a few bucks, but this year she became one of them.

“It’s not as boring as I thought it was,” said Ross while she blew on her hands to keep warm while waiting in line at the Best Buy. “I’d rather be home in bed, but my friends wanted to make a day of it. Shopping, a movie, some lunch. So I gave in.” “I’m not here to buy anything, I’m just here for moral support and to help carry some stuff.” And in return she gets to select the movie they’ll watch later on during the day. “Its between the ‘Twilight’ and ‘The Men Who Stare at Goats’.

For Sara Swaditch and her mother, Susan Bellomo, Black Friday is all about tradition and camaraderie. They have the routine down to an art. “We made our Dunkin’ Donuts stop. Coffee, doughnuts then Kohl’s,” said Swaditch. Then the two head to Toys R Us and JC Penney. Bellomo drives in from Flemington , N.J., to spend the holiday weekend with her daughter, and they look forward to the deals and the mother daughter bonding.

Wal-Mart is taking a page from its playbook and has launched a full fledged price war with Amazon.com and a nation of other book retailers by lowering their online prices on certain highly anticipated hardback book titles to nine dollars each.

Wal-Mart has built its strategy on using its massive buying power to undercut competitor’s prices. But it sells enough products in enough categories to make up for any losses on individual items it uses to bring people into its stores.

The barrel of discounts, which began on Thursday when the retailer listed prices for some upcoming hardcover releases such as Dean Koontz’s “Breathless” and Stephen King’s “Under the Dome” at ten dollars, was countered with a similar price cut by Amazon, presently the largest online bookseller. That sparked the two competitors to lower their prices even further to nine dollars.

The book discounts, the latest in a series of aggressive online maneuvers by the world’s largest retailer, could position the company to do to the online marketplace what Walmart stores did to local merchants decades ago.

“While it is the largest retailer in the United States, it’s not the largest online retailer in the United States,” said Albert Greco, professor of marketing at New York City’s Fordham University. “And this appears to be an attempt to increase its position in online sales.”

The price war also is not very good news to the large chain bookstores Borders, and Barnes & Noble, which have been squeezed hard by Amazon.com’s discounting and a decline in their music business.

In the past few months Wal-Mart has sparked up the competition in several retail arenas, beginning with an Amazon.com like announcement in late August that it would allow outside retailers to sell nearly one million items ranging from baby products to sports memorabilia on it’s Walmart.com site.

Next came the news that the low price specialist would fill 90 day supplies of over 300 generic prescriptions by mail for as little as ten dollars each and was also launching it’s own cell phone plan.

And just this week, the company announced it would begin selling health and beauty products online also. But it was the announcement about books that created the biggest stir.

Increased contraceptive use has led to fewer abortions throughout the world, but deaths from unsafe abortions remain a terrible problem, killing 70 thousand women annually, a research institute reported Tuesday in a major global survey.

About 38,000 of these deaths are in sub-Saharan Africa, which was singled out as the region with the lowest rates of contraceptive use and the highest rates of unintended pregnancies.

The report has been in the making for three years and was compiled by the New York based Guttmacher Institute, which supports abortion rights and is a leading source of data on abortion related trends. Researchers examined data from individual countries and multinational organizations.

Sharon Camp, the institute’s president said “In almost all developed countries, abortion is safe and legal, but in much of the developing world, abortion remains highly restricted, unsafe abortion is common and continues to damage women’s health and often leads to their deaths.”

“We need to be much more thoughtful in helping women with supportive services so they don’t need to resort to the unnatural act of abortion,” she said.

The number of abortions throughout the world fell from 45.5 million in 1995 to 41.6 million in 2003, which is the latest year for which global figures are available. A key reason for that drop was that the portion of married women using contraception increased from 54 percent in 1990 to 63 percent in 2003 as availability increased and social values changed. Guttmacher’s researchers said contraceptive use had increased in every major region, but still staggered badly behind in Africa. The use of contraceptives is used by only 28 percent of married women there, compared with at least 68 percent in other major regions.

Abortions worldwide are declining even as more countries liberalize their abortion laws.

A survey concluded that abortion occurs at roughly equal rates in countries where it is legal and where it is highly restricted. The key difference, according to the report, is the high rate of deaths and medical complications from unsafe clandestine abortions in the restrictive countries.

“Legal restrictions do not stop abortion from happening. They just make the procedure dangerous,” the reported stated. “Too many women are maimed or killed each year because they lack legal abortion access.”

In one example, the report told of a Nigerian woman who first tried to induce an abortion by drinking an herbal concoction, then consulted a traditional healer who inserted leaves in her vagina that caused internal injuries which led to her death.

Overall, the report is “a good news, bad news story,” said Susan Cohen, the Guttmacher Institute’s director of government affairs, who was happy about the decline in abortions and unintended pregnancies.

“The bad news is that where most of the poor women live, throughout the developing world, unsafe abortion remains very high, and women are dying as a result of it,” she said. “It’s so preventable, and that’s the tragedy.”

GoPetition, www.gopetition.com is the leading international petition website with more than 30,000 currently active petitions frrom more than 75 countries worldwide. GoPetition is a nonpartisan website with no political affiliations. You have to register to use the site, it’s free. After you register, you can write your own petition, using the website’s step by step instructions and guidelines. The guidelines help you write up either a paper petition or an e-petition with detailed explanations about researching the topic, writing in clear language and help with promoting your petition. The website has all kinds of free tools to help publicize your petition.

The homepage lists featured petitions but you can also browse petitions by country of origin, topic, most recent or most popular. The topics include animal welfare, business, environment, health, human rights, law reform, music, politics, religion, sports, television and youth issues.

When you click on a topic, you will see a list of petitions, from the most current to the oldest, with a few sentences about it’s goal. It tells you who the author of the petition is and the date the petition was created. When you click on the complete petition, you can read the full version, which includes it’s country of origin, goal, background and actual petition. At the end of each petition is a link to click if you wish to support it, or sign the petition itself.

These are just some of the hundreds of active global petitions:

End politically motivated violence against women in Zimbabwe.

Legalize paintball in Tasmania.

Save Polaroid film.

There is a petition for every cause.

For example, under animal rights, there are petitions to make zoo habitats larger for the animals they house, petitions to stop the British government from allowing experiments on Beagles, petitions to end the inhumane use of electric shock collars, and petitions to eliminate the cruel treatment of snails in guppy farming.

Under the films and movies topic, there are requests mostly for producers to make sequels to movies, television airing times to be changed and give Oscars and other awards to some actors and actresses.

The environmental topic has hundreds of petitions to stop industrial projects on wetlands, agricultural lands and forests, as well as saving trees, stopping global warming and combatting overpopulation.

One of the more interesting topics on the website is human rights, which has subcategories of children’s rights and human rights. There are all kinds of petitions for ending abuses of particular individuals all over the world as well as general, topical ones, such as ending the practice of students getting tardy slips when they are late for lunch at Thornton Fractional South High School in Lansing, Illinois.

While some of the petitions on the website may seem outrageous, many are thoughtful, well researched and extremely well written. The website also has forums where users can discuss their petitions as well as others, and news stories on some of the petitions created through the website that did make a difference. For example, one petition helped Illinois resident Jake Grys get his home renovated on the ABC show, “Extreme Makeover.”

The petitions covering the United States range from banning wind turbines on beaches in Florida, reinstating country singer Hank Williams to the Grand Ole Opry, making Veterans Day a national, paid holiday and declaring August 29th as Michael Jackson Day. Many of the United States petitions are political, such as calling for the resignation of certain White House staff. Others are community minded, such as saving post offices earmarked to close, saving hospitals, banning pet sales in malls and expanding environmental projects.

A lot of us have had some really wild nights while we were in college, some of us taking off more clothing than we should have, but only a select few have turned those outrageous romps into a documentary.

The Hamilton College Varsity Streaking Team has sprung back in action, spreading its message of peace and love for running around prestigious college campuses in the nude.

Four years ago, students at this picturesque upstate New York college sent shock waves through New England, prancing completely nude around the grounds of Tufts, Wesleyan, Amherst, Williams and Trinity, among many other institutions of higher learning.

Now, the team’s wild adventures are hitting the film festival circuit, with a screening last week at the New York Television Festival. And, of course, you can’t unveil a movie called ‘Streak to Win’ without treating the crowd to a quick dash up and down the aisles wearing nothing but sneakers.

“I think everyone was expecting it, including the organizers,” said Sean Tice, the Hamilton graduate and streaking team veteran who co-created the documentary. “So we didn’t want to let any of them down.”
It is amazing to consider how 20 Hamilton students turned a wild college prank into something much, much more.

“When I streak, I hear Mozart,” one young man says as the film starts.
A female team member concurs, “It’s not sexual, it is a profound feeling of interconnectedness.”

At Middlebury College in Vermont, the Hamilton crew interrupted a rugby game, upstaging the home team cheerleaders as they sprinted across the field with the wind gusting between their legs and their appendages flapping in the breeze.

At Connecticut College, they strolled across the tree lined campus like prospective students, with one of them walking backward like a tour guide, pointing out important buildings and points of interest. Of course, no one in this strange entourage had on one stitch of clothing, they did however wear masks and sneakers.

As a cultural phenomena, streaking became the rage in the 1970′s, when it became quite common to go to a sporting event and see someone drop their pants and run on to the playing field.

Hamilton students decided to revive the tradition in 2002, forming the streaking team, mainly as a joke, but also as a social club for students who wanted to shed more than just freshman inhibitions.
“It was fun, but it eventually became boring to streak at home,” said Tice, who majored in English and religious studies.

“We knew we would not truly be a varsity team unless we competed at other colleges.”
In the fall of 2004, the team finally went intercollegiate. They rented a 30 foot RV and piled into it , then they toured the 11 Northeastern colleges that Hamilton competes with in sports, a group of schools known as the NESCAC. They also made a couple of stops at Princeton and Wellesley for some Ivy League and Seven Sisters frolicking.

“The game plan was to stick together, not to lose anyone,” Tice said.

And by that standard, the Hamilton team was really good. At Wellesley, three of them lost their way, and got detained by campus police. No charges were filled there, but then at Colgate University, the entire team was arrested, and each got hit with a $200 fine.

It was a somewhat harder to explain their wild antics when parents of young children complained. But that wasn’t enough to stop them. “It didn’t happen that often, because we were at college campuses,” Tice said. “But it did happened a few times. I think a conversation about the body with a child can be a good thing.”

Nevertheless, Hamilton ranked itself the number 1 varsity streaking team in the nation, declaring itself undefeated. Of course, in the non-existent sport of college level competitive streaking, victory is hard to quantify. Some would say you win simply by showing up without wearing any clothing.
